Sean Coxon, who also holds a position on its board of directors, said: “We’re looking for fundraising efforts all the time, and with the new stadium being built we were looking to get some money to put towards it.”

He and his partner will tackle the event along the South Downs Way on April 8. Sean, 47, who co-runs a local fitness business with his partner in Sawston called Anybody Fitness, revealed that his grandfather played for City in the late 1940s.

“That’s partly why I got involved in helping out on the board of directors,” he said. “I think everybody really is very passionate about the club and putting money towards it and helping bring them back to where they should be after 10 years out in the wilderness and not having a home.”

Sean says the new stadium in Sawston is “mostly built” but added: “Every penny we raise will go towards the Journey Home Fund, and that goes to bringing the stadium up to scratch.”

The club is aiming to have the stadium open in August for the start of the new season. “We might not have all of the internal fit-out done by then,” said Sean, “but we’re hoping to have it open for that August kick-off.”

Long-distance running is something Sean and his partner have both done in the past, “but this will be the furthest we’ve ever done in terms of long-distance running. In terms of training, we’re running about 100km a week.”

At the time of writing, Sean’s GoFundMe page is up to £945 of the £1,500 goal. The club also holds regular quiz nights and bingo nights to fundraise. “A lot of the support we get is from the Cambridge City Supporters Trust,” said Sean, “so they organise a lot of the fundraising events.

“Not having an actual ground, it’s quite difficult because we have to hire venues, so hopefully once we’ve got the ground open we’ll be able to do a lot more fundraising inside our ground.”
