Secure cycle parking scheme launched in Cambridge
People will soon have access to safe and secure cycle parking at their place of work following the completion of a pilot scheme to encourage more people to travel by two wheels.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership has awarded grants to the University of Cambridge, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and, subject to planning permission, Featurespace on the Cambridge Science Park to be used for secure cycle parking infrastructure – such as bike lockers, CCTV and bike hangers.
Cllr Elisa Meschini, Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said: “A lack of secure cycling facilities is often listed as a barrier for people using their bike. This latest investment in active travel by the GCP will help to encourage more people to travel to work on two wheels, helping to reduce congestion, improve air quality and the quality of life for our workforce.”
In October, the GCP invited businesses looking to install secure cycle parking to apply for up to a £10,000 grant or, for larger projects, up to 50 percent in match funding as part of a pilot scheme to get more of the workforce to cycle.
Applicants were considered and scored during two rounds in which they had to provide detailed plans, quotes and measures they have implemented to encourage active travel among their workforce.
