Shops evacuated as fire hits retail premises in Cambridge city centre




Shops were evacuated in the centre of Cambridge as fire broke out at an empty retail premises.

Crews from Cambridge were called to Market Hill at 12.41pm on Wednesday (August 9) when the blaze took hold at the front of the unit by Marks & Spencer.

Wearing breathing apparatus, they extinguished the fire using a hose reel and cleared the smoke using a positive pressure ventilation fan.

The neighbouring shops were evacuated as a precaution, but there were no injuries reported and the crews returned to their station by 2.15pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
