Smoke seen for miles as fire breaks out at former landfill site near Witchford




A major fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon (22 April) at the former landfill site off Grunty Fen Road, near Witchford.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said on Tuesday afternoon: “We were called at 4.34pm to a fire at a landfill site on Grunty Fen Road. We have four fire engines and a water carrier currently at the scene.

“Residents in the area have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed for the next few hours while we tackle the fire.”

It is not believed that anyone has been injured. Thick black smoke plumes could be seen from miles around as the flames took hold.

The cause is not yet known.
