All the winners of Royal Papworth Hospital’s Staff Awards 2022

A lung cancer nurse with decades of NHS service, a cardiology doctor described as an ‘inspiration’ to students and a team which set up a new ward in 24 hours on New Year’s Eve were among the winners at Royal Papworth Hospital’s Staff Awards 2022.

The ceremony at Homerton College, on December 19, was hosted by former BBC Look East presenter Stewart White and was sponsored by Philips UK and Ireland and Fysicon.

Attended by staff, partners and the hospital’s leadership team, the awards recognised the outstanding levels of achievement from individuals and teams across the trust, which runs the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital on Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The Team of the Year Award went to the hospital’s Ward 3 North team for setting up a new respiratory unit to care for acute Covid-19 patients who were taken to Royal Papworth from other hospitals across the East of England region. They did this in 24 hours over New Year’s Eve in 2020.

Claire Haslop, a lung cancer specialist nurse, was recognised for her compassion to patients while Dr Malek Hassan was rewarded for showing excellence in his care to patients and training given to students.

Comprising 15 categories, the awards recognised achievement aligning to the hospital’s values of compassion, excellence and collaboration. The winners were each presented with a trophy and gift vouchers, while those highly commended received a certificate and vouchers.

Eilish Midlane, Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust chief executive, said: “It is a tremendous honour to be able to reward our staff with formal recognition of their achievements and to highlight how much their efforts are appreciated by the people they care for, their families and by their fellow colleagues in the trust.

“It is also a chance to say thank you to all our staff who represent our values of collaboration, compassion and excellence in their everyday efforts. We received more than 300 nominations for our Staff Awards this year, more than we ever have previously, which shows the esteem held for our staff by both the public and their colleagues.

“To see numerous instances of our staff going above and beyond every day makes me immensely proud to lead this trust, and one that offers exceptional service to our patients and their families on a 24/7 basis.

“I wish to extend my congratulations to all the award-winning individuals and teams, those highly commended and all colleagues nominated.”
