The Cambridge Union announces its programme of speakers and debates for the coming term
Among the famous names that have confirmed to appear at the Union are actors Michelle Rodriguez (October 9), Pedro Pascal, Sir Ben Kingsley (both dates TBC) and Adam Driver (October 6).
Comedian and star of the BBC’s Have I Got News for You, Paul Merton, will be in Cambridge on October 22, while the former Manchetser United and Everton manager and Cambridge United footballer David Moyes is scheduled for November 25.
Colombian-French politician Ingrid Betancourt (date TBC) and HSH Prince Albert of Monaco (November 23) are also included.
Those participating in the debates and motions include Kate Andrews (#MeToo movement has failed), Sir Vince Cable (special relationship debate), Ken Clarke (Cambridge Mafia, debating debates), Dame Margaret Hodge (Is the Left Losing its way?), and Baroness Shirley Williams and Simon Heffer (presidential debate).
A new major initiative will also be started this term which will see one slot in every debate given over to a student, who will be selected by audition. The Union says this will give its members the chance to rub shoulders with some of the most influential people in the world and to debate alongside them.
