The phone theft scam used on unsuspecting coffee drinkers and diners in Cambridge - and how to avoid being a victim

Police in Cambridge have had reports of mobile phone thieves targeting al fresco diners and cafe customers using a distraction technique.

The con artists approach their intended victim while they are sitting at a table outside.

They might ask for money, directions or simply strike up a conversation, then use a piece of paper or a menu to cover a phone on the table.

The phone will then be removed underneath the paper while the thief is still distracting the victim.

Victims often do not realise their phone has been stolen until the thieves have managed to get away.

Cambridgeshire police have urged people:

- Not to leave their phone or tablet unattended, out of sight or on a table.
- To be aware of your surroundings
- To put away their devices when they have finished using them
- Not to engage with anyone who is asking for money and acting suspiciously.
