They arrived shortly before 3am to find two parked cars had been damaged and a white Hyundai had smashed through some metal railings and was hanging above the water.

Muhammed Aavesh, of Priory Road, Cambridge, was found at the scene but initially denied being the driver. He was arrested after failing to provide a roadside breath test.

In custody the 23-year-old provided an evidential reading of 49, over the legal drink drive limit of 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

Following an investigation, CCTV was discovered capturing Aavesh driving the vehicle moments earlier in the city centre.

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (6 March), Aavesh pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He was disqualified from driving for 14 months and must pay a £50 fine.

PC Olivia Webster said: “Even a small amount of alcohol can slow your reactions, blur your judgement, and turn a routine drive into a deadly risk for the driver and everyone else on the road.

“Aavesh is very lucky to walk away uninjured on this occasion and we hope it is a lesson learned that drink driving is just not worth the risk.”

The force operates a confidential drink and drug hotline available 24/7 on 0800 032 0845.
