Yellow weather warning as Cambridgeshire braces itself for more snow

Snow showers set to continue on Tuesday

Snow showers, or longer periods of snow, are expected on Tuesday, accompanied by very low temperatures

The previous weather warning has been extended further north into coastal Suffolk and a little further west across across southeast England.

There is the likelihood of travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off.

Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

Bin crews will be on the road in the morning carrying out scheduled collections, but residents in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire are being warned that if the forecasted snow arrives it will mean that blue and black collections will be prioritised over green bins.

The Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service between South Cambridgeshire District and Cambridge City Councils have around 40 waste collection vehicles manned by approximately 120 staff out collecting bins today (Tuesday) – but slippery conditions on both the roads and footpaths may mean collections are slower than usual.

Cllr Mark Howell, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, said: “When enough snow falls to disrupt people getting around on the roads, our bin crews will be tackling exactly the same problems. “The day after the first snowfall can also be even tougher as the paths become incredibly slippery and mean we simply cannot get around as quickly. Our teams will assess each day and keep our website updated with the latest news.

“If your green bin is not collected, please bear with us and if you have very little waste in it and do not need to put it out this week it will help us too.”

Cllr Rosy Moore, executive councillor for environmental services and city centre at Cambridge City Council, said: “Our crews do a brilliant job when the weather is against them but they encounter the same issues on the roads as everyone else.

“Bin trucks are 26-tonne vehicles and we must make sure we put everyone’s safety first.”
