Ashley Sizer and Shane Hornsey make the most of late partnership to win Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union County Fourball
Duo reap the rewards on home turf
Ashley Sizer was the super-sub as he joined forces with Shane Hornsey to win the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union County Fourball at Ely City Golf Club.
Hornsey was due to be playing with father David, but he had to pull out through injury so Sizer stepped up to fill the breach, and did so in impressive fashion.
The wet conditions did not affect the scoring as Ramsey’s Martin Hollands and Ollie Wright scored 44 points to take the halfway lead, closely followed by Saffron Walden’s Spencer Burlingham and Gary Bowyer, Hornsey and Sizer, and Ely’s Ross Wilson and Josh Bailey, who all shot 43.
Defending champions Terry and Luke Ryan were a further shot back on 42 points, with Ramsey’s Nick Gear and Josh Hull.
As the rain worsened, the afternoon produced only six scores in the 40s.
St Ives’ Mark Priestley and George Purvis posted 42 points to take the lead, with three pairs still out on the course.
But they were pipped to the crown by Hornsey and Sizer, who scored 40 to finish on 83.
They managed 19 points on the front nine, but rallied with a birdie on the 16th and a net birdie on the 17th, with Sizer’s par on the 18th sealing the victory.
