Cambridge United boss Mark Bonner keen to add attackers to his squad before new Sky Bet League One season starts
Head coach Mark Bonner is eager to add two or three more attack-minded players to his Cambridge United squad before the new Sky Bet League One season gets under way on August 5.
Of the four new additions so far this summer, only Gassan Ahadme – signed on loan from Ipswich Town – plays in the advanced areas of the pitch.
And with the previous campaign’s leading goalscorer Sam Smith – alongside the likes of fellow attackers Harvey Knibbs, Joe Ironside and Shilow Tracey – having moved on as free agents in recent weeks, Bonner has spoken of the need for replacements.
“We’ve got lots of live conversations and things going on with people. A lot of players are sitting and waiting to find out what else is available so we’ll just see what comes up,” he said after today’s 3-1 friendly victory at lower-league St Albans City.
“We’re certainly looking to add in those attacking areas of the pitch – two or three players. We’ll see how the next few days pan out and as soon as we can we’ll add to the group.
”The top end, creativity, goals and chances creators – that’s what we’re after. We need some pace in the wide areas. We certainly want to add a couple there and then we’ll see where we are with the rest (of the squad).
“We’ve definitely got more players to find, we need two or three more and we will have them before the season starts. We need more competition, more pace, more creativity and we’re working on that. Once we get that then we’ll decide if we are happy with the squad going into the season.”
