Mark Bonner discusses Cambridge United’s current run in Sky Bet League One and facing Morecambe
Mark Bonner says Cambridge United must not hide from their current position ahead of a key clash with Morecambe in Sky Bet League One this weekend.
A run of one win from their last nine league games has seen the U's drop to 20th in the table, just one place and two points above the relegation zone.
Cambridge host Morecambe on Saturday (3pm), a side who have won their last three games to climb out of the bottom four and up to 19th.
"You can't carry the weight or the burden of the previous games," the U's head coach said.
"But you also have to understand the reality of our position and our run and the situation we find ourselves in.
"We can't hide from that. We've got to win games. We've got to win more of them and we've got to take points from more games than we have. That's the truth of it.
"You can't hide from that, but you also can't burden yourself going on the pitch and being frightened of that either.
"You need to go and play with real freedom and I think a couple of the big strengths for us is you can come to the training ground and spend some time with us and you wouldn't necessarily pick up the signs of a team that's had the run we've had.
"Even game after game we can go and hit a real high level, like last weekend, and that isn't always possible from teams that have had a tough run.
"It's a testament to the environment, the quality and the character of the team.
"You also have to face the reality. We haven't got enough points. We haven't won enough games and in the end we can't be soft about it.
"We have to understand the situation and go and take the games on and we know we need more results than what we've had."
The Cambridge boss revealed in today's pre-match press conference that recent loan signing Steve Seddon, who joined from Oxford United, suffered a fractured cheek bone and fractured eye socket in his debut last Saturday.
The full-back was taken off 45 minutes into last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers and yesterday spent six-and-a-half hours undergoing an operation.
Bonner is hopeful Seddon's absence may not be as long as expected, but his spell on the sidelines will be a minimum of six weeks.
