Stevenage v Cambridge United: Head coach Garry Monk has selection issues to ponder after first win of the season against Wigan Athletic
In an ideal world, Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk would name an unchanged starting line-up for tomorrow night’s trip to Stevenage.
Winless this season heading into Saturday’s League One clash against Wigan Athletic, the U’s raced out of the traps and were rewarded with two early goals that they held on to for the remainder of the contest to seal a much-needed first victory.
However, with a home encounter against new basement side Burton Albion to come on Saturday (26 October), Monk is wary of overloading certain members of the squad.
He said: “There’s so many considerations but that’s why it’s a squad game and it’s probably more important than ever because you can make five subs a game.
“You’ve seen – especially in the last three games but also games before that – subs are coming on and helping to impact of the game. That’s their job and that’s why it’s a squad game.
“Yes you do have to make a decision on what 11 starts and take a lot of considerations in, but it’s always with the intention of going out there to try to win the game. Then the guys that come on need to impact whichever situation we’re in, whether that’s to maintain a lead or get us back into the game.
“They’re not easy decisions, especially more so after you’ve won a game. But we’re mindful of the fact there’s three games this week and we’ve got to make the right decisions.”
Stevenage, who are managed by former Cambridge forward Alex Revell, have enjoyed a positive start to the new term.
They have won four of their five home fixtures, while Saturday’s 1-0 triumph at Mansfield moved them into the top half of the table.
Monk added: “They’re strong and it will be a different game to Saturday for sure. They’re doing well in the league so far this season and that’s to be expected.
“It’s a real physical game with them, a lot of energy and athleticism. We’re going to have to be on our mettle to deal with all of that.
“But it’s the same thing again – we need to impose ourselves and our game like we did on Saturday and make it the game we want. We need to double those efforts to get the outcome we want.”
Monk also revealed that no fresh injury concerns were picked up during the win over Wigan.
