Cambridge City beaten 2-1 by relegated Ipswich Wanderers in Isthmian League North Division encounter
Cambridge City suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat at the hands of already-relegated Ipswich Wanderers on Saturday.
Despite seeing their Isthmian League North Division play-off hopes ended by a poor run of form across February and parts of March, the Lilywhites went into the clash against Wanderers having collected four points from the previous six on offer.
However, following their demotion being confirmed the previous weekend, it was bottom-of-the-table Wanderers that headed back over the Suffolk border with all three points in tow.
The away side broke the deadlock after just four minutes when Jose Santa de la Paz’s effort from Emmanuel Osei’s cross got the better of City goalkeeper James Philp.
Wanderers also scored early on in the second half through Owen Andrews, who turned the ball in from a corner.
The home side halved the deficit with 12 minutes remaining courtesy of Samrai Gebrai’s penalty, which was awarded after substitute Ramiah Mills had been fouled inside the box.
Boss Jamie Cureton, 49, threw himself on in the dying stages of the encounter for a City debut, but he was unable to inspire his side to score an equalising goal.
Twelfth-placed City will have home advantage again on Saturday (12 April) when they welcome Brightlingsea Regent to the FWD-IP Community Stadium.
