Callum Burton is the penalty shootout star for Cambridge United against Peterborough United in the Papa John's Trophy
Callum Burton was the spot-kick star for Cambridge United in the Papa John's Trophy against Peterborough United.
The U's keeper saved three of the visitors' penalties in the shootout to give them a 3-1 success, after the sides had drawn 1-1 at the end of normal time.
Flynn Clarke had given Peterborough the lead four minutes into the second half, but Ben Worman scored his first professional goal for the U’s four minutes from time, taking the game to penalties to earn the bonus point with both sides having already qualified for the knockout stage.
In fairness, United were probably worthy of the win, rather than just the bonus point, particularly for their second-half performance.
Peterborough had a few off-target half-chances in the first 10 minutes, but the first opportunity of real note went to the U’s in the 22nd minute.
Andy Dallas broke the offside trap and from just outside the area hit a curling effort that clipped the outside of the post and went wide.
Three minutes later, a great move into the area saw Harvey Knibbs flick a one-two back to Hiram Boateng, and Peterborough keeper Daniel Gyollia padded away the shot.
A tantalising cross by Boateng in the 31st minute was then headed wide by Knibbs, but then the play swung up the other end.
A teasing delivery from the left by Harrison Burrows was somehow hit over the bar in front of goal by Idris Kanu in the 34th minute.
Serhat Tasdemir then had a terrific curling effort from outside the area hit the bar and bounced clear.
The final chance of the half went to Ronnie Edwards, who skied a shot over at the back post from a Peterborough corner.
There was little time for United to settle before Posh had the lead in the second half, and it was some strike from Clarke.
The 17-year-old got possession about 30 yards out and cannoned a shot that struck the bar and bounced in, leaving Burton rooted to the spot.
United then delivered the perfect response.
In the 52nd minute, Boateng’s shot deflected into the path of Dallas, but his chance was cleared off the line by a defender.
Idris El Mizouni whipped in a free kick in the 65th minute which Harry Darling headed over from close range, and then Knowles’ curling 25-yard free kick was heading towards the top corner when it was saved by Gyollia.
The U’s equaliser arrived in the 86th minute.
Gyollia impressively kept out Dallas’ initial shot from close range, but the keeper then spilled the ball in the following passage of play for Worman to find the net to make it 1-1 at the end of normal time, and it meant it went to penalties to earn the bonus point up for stake.
Peterborough went first, but keeper Burton saved Burrows' spot-kick to his right.
Harrison Dunk put United ahead, and Ethan Hamilton made it level with Posh's second penalty.
Knowles restored United's lead, and then Burton saved from Tasdemir.
Dallas made it 3-1 to the hosts, and when Burton saved Mo Eisa's effort, it wrapped up the success - and bonus point - for the U's.
