Cambridge driver Callum Ilott keen to be among the frontrunners at Le Mans 24 Hours

Callum Ilott will bid to win the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours outright at only his second attempt this weekend.

The Cambridge-born racer will be having just his fourth race for British squad Hertz Team JOTA, racing a Porsche 963 Hypercar in the World Endurance Championship.

He will share driving duties of the #12 Porsche with Will Stevens and Norman Nato in the 92nd running of the annual twice-around-the-clock encounter that features a capacity 62 cars separated in to three classes.

Ilott, who finished third in the GTE Am class and 27th overall in his only previous Le Mans appearance in 2021, has already finished second (Qatar), 13th (Imola, Italy) and first (Spa, Belgium) in the opening rounds of the eight-event WEC.

He said: “We definitely have the pace to get a podium and potentially a win but it’s such a long race in which absolutely anything can happen.

“It’s my second Le Mans 24 Hours having finished third in a GT car. I loved it the first time and was pretty strong. But going to Le Mans being able to compete for outright honours is incredible.

“It's such a cool event and I love the prospect of racing for 24 hours.”
