Will Golding hailed the feats of Cambridge City after they qualified for the national league by winning the East Region Indoor Championships.

They matched their exploits of 12 months ago by securing five victories out of five at the UEA Sportspark in Norwich.

Having beaten Old Southendian 7-3 and UEA 15-3 on day one, it put them in Men's Division One where they would face favourites Southgate.

Their opening match was a 5-2 clash against Chelmsford, setting them up nicely for what would be the decider.

“I remember getting some warnings from some umpires before we played them that Southgate seemed very good,” said captain Golding.

City trailed 2-0 early on, but some system changes from player-coach Andy Richardson helped them peg it back to 2-2.

However, going into the final quarter they were 4-3 down. Southgate had a player sin-binned with two minutes remaining, and City were awarded a penalty flick that Euan Gilmour scored to make it 4-4.

“I remember thinking on the bench that I would probably take a draw, as they were good,” said Golding.

“But in the final 20 seconds, Grant Gilmour made a crucial tackle in our own D and passed to Euan. He dribbled up the pitch, took a shot which ricocheted off the keeper and into Grant Gilmour’s path to slot home into an empty net with eight seconds to go.

“We all went pretty crazy.”

They went on to seal a 4-2 win over Wapping, and that secured City a place back in the national leagues in Canterbury on the first weekend in January.

“It felt great, absolutely amazing,” said Golding. “There are quite few players moving on next year so it’s our final hurrah as an indoor squad.

“It was really good. It’s always quite nice being the underdogs against a team that you think is going to win.

“We managed to hold our own, and we had three really good under-18 players coming through, who played in those games - Fergus Wootton, Will Jones and James Pitchford.”

He added: “Last year, we played in it but sadly we lost a few players through availability.

“I think we will be able to recruit some players [from the outdoor first-team squad] so we should be able to be much more competitive than we were last year.”
