Cambridge grab a point from trip to Hull Ionians
And Shelford and Cantabs also suffered defeats
A late penalty from Ben Penfold earned Cambridge a losing bonus point as they were defeated 27-21 at Hull Ionians in National League One.
Jack Green opened the scoring for Cambridge with a penalty after 12 minutes, but Rikki Stout touched down after 20 minutes to put Hull 5-3 ahead.
Cambridge had a 10-5 lead at half time as Mike Ayrton touched down and Green converted.
Hull edged in front on 56 minutes when Stout got his second, and Chris Bell added the extras. However, Green’s penalty made it 13-12 to Cambridge.
A penalty try and Steve Slingsby’s touch down saw Hull go 24-13 in front, before Oli Petrides scored for Cambridge.
Bell’s drop goal looked set to deprive Cambridge of a losing bonus point for being within seven, but Penfold’s kick meant the visitors at least had something to take back with them from the defeat.
Meanwhile, Redmond Newberry scored Shelford’s try as they were beaten 26-5 by Barnes in London & SE Premier League. And Sudbury’s wingers were in top form in London League 2NE as they won 54-15 against Cantabrigian, for whom Jonny Regan and Tom Bailey got tries and James Hayward kicked five points.
