Cambridge Lancers clinch two wins in double header over Essex Redbacks in East of England Baseball League

Cambridge Lancers clinched two wins in a double header against Essex Redbacks in the East of England Baseball League, Division One.

In the first game, there was a good display of pitching from Lancers’ Adam Brown and Redbacks’ Sean Briscomb.

A seven-inning thriller within the two-hour time limit is almost unheard of and shows the quality that was on display.

The Redbacks got the bats swinging early and scored five runs in the top of the first inning putting Cambridge on the back foot. But the Lancers were able to reply in inning two with a two-run home run from Brown, who showed his prowess on both sides of the ball.

A tense two-and-a-half innings of scoreless baseball from both teams followed, with some top fielding, until the Lancers broke the deadlock with two runs scoring in inning five.

It was 7-7 going into the final seventh inning.

The Lancers were able to open the inning with a shut-out, three outs and a triple from Cam Doncaster and walk-off single from Brown to give the Lancers an 8-7 win.

In game two, it was a high-scoring affair. The Lancers and Redbacks traded blows in the first inning, and it was the Essex side that took a 3-2 lead going into inning two.

Cambridge pitcher Leonard Kung was then able to start putting his stamp on the game, holding the Redbacks to one run with Cambridge scoring three in quick succession.

The attacking depth of the Lancers then proved out in the next inning with the Lancers scoring seven runs to put the game beyond doubt with a 12-6 success.

Cambridge Baseball are always looking for new members.

All abilities are welcome and they train at Coldham’s Common on Thursday nights at 6pm. Matches take place on Sundays at 12pm.
