Cambridge soundly beaten on return to RFU Championship action by nine-try Doncaster Knights

Head coach Richie Williams believes that his Cambridge side ‘did not do themselves justice’ during last weekend’s 52-17 defeat at Doncaster.

Having gone six weeks without a RFU Championship fixture, all Cambridge had to show for their return to action was a pair of tries from Iestyn Rees and Elias Caven alongside a Louis Grimoldby penalty.

Williams said: “It was a tough result. We prepared really well in the week and spoke a lot around controlling what we could control.

“But unfortunately after about minute 15 we gave away some soft penalties in the middle third which allowed Doncaster entries into our 22 – they scored three tries off the back of those errors.

“We spoke at half-time about our discipline in the middle, but we conceded a try early and the game snowballed and we lost momentum.

“When you allow a team like Doncaster time and space on the ball there’s only going to be one answer. We’re really disappointed and I feel we haven’t done ourselves justice.”

Second-from-bottom Cambridge will host Nottingham on Saturday (7 December).
