Cambridge Rugby Club’s interim head coach Anthony Allen reflects on RFU Championship defeat to Hartpury University

Interim head coach Anthony Allen felt that his Cambridge side deserved more from their 33-19 home defeat at the hands of Hartpury University last weekend.

Kayde Sylvester, Joseph Gaffan and Ewan Baker all dotted down for the hosts, but they still fell short of both the try and losing bonus points.

However, Allen believed that the team’s display was worthy of a greater return.

“You don’t mind mistakes from people, players and officials, but it’s costing us points,” he told the Jacko Podcast.

“It’s hard but we need to get better and look at ourselves first and foremost – I’ve said that to the group.

“But it is really hard when you’re fighting super hard and competing in games. I just feel very frustrated for the group more than anything.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard and we are doing that.

“The performances are showing, we’re in games and we’re very unlucky to not come away with points out of the game.”

The defeat has kept Cambridge bottom of the RFU Championship standings, three points adrift of Caldy.

The team will aim to halt their five-match losing streak on Sunday (6 April) when they make the long trip to face Cornish Pirates.
