Cambridge United await injury update ahead of Cheltenham Town clash
U's boss Shaun Derry to make late calls
Shaun Derry will be making a number of late fitness calls before deciding his Cambridge United squad for the trip to Cheltenham Town on Saturday (March 18).
But the good news for the U’s could be the possible return of striker Barry Corr after a slight groin strain.
“We’re optimistic he can be involved,” said Derry. “He had a light session on Tuesday with the youth team and he will be out training today.
“We just have to see how he responds to two days training in the week and see if we can get him involved for the weekend.
“The problem you’ve got is that you have to rewind the clock and at a time where I thought we could be starting Barry Corr for the Cheltenham game, unfortunately if we are going to take him down to Cheltenham he is going to be making a cameo appearance, 15 to 20 minutes.
“That brings a difficulty as well because you have to manage your timings with other players and sometimes that’s not ideal.”
However, there will need to be assessments on James Dunne, who went off with an injury in the defeat to Hartlepool United on Tuesday night, and fellow midfielder Liam O’Neil, among others.
“We took a few knocks on Tuesday, with a couple of dead legs to add to the equation, which is nothing surprising,” said Derry.
“There are not too many times I came off the pitch without getting a dead leg, that’s for sure.
“James Dunne took a pretty nasty kick on his heel which was really painful for him. He came out of the stadium on a pair of crutches which was just to take the load off the heel for the night.
“He will be assessed this morning, so James will be touch and go for the weekend as well.
“Liam has had a problem with his hamstring and I’m not too sure Liam will make the trip.”
Greg Taylor was only able to make the bench against Hartlepool, but is back in contention again for Saturday.
“We spoke about Greg playing more than actually training in the last two or three weeks,” said Derry. “We had to be careful with him especially on the back of his performance (against Carlisle United) on Saturday, which was very good.
“Being on the bus for the best part of 12 hours probably was a little bit too much for Greg to play again on Tuesday night, but he will be available to start the game this weekend.”
