Cambridge United seek joy on the road at Exeter
U's aim to pick up away points
Shaun Derry is hoping that Cambridge United can continue their encouraging away form when they make the trip to Exeter City tomorrow.
The U’s five-match unbeaten run was brought to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Grimsby last weekend, and with the Sky Bet League Two table so tightly packed, they are now fourth from bottom.
But only seven points separates seventh place and 23rd, and United have only lost one of their last five games on the road in all competitions.
“We’ve just got to concentrate on what we can do and some of the away performances of late have been of a high standard,” said Derry.
“We looked upon the differing aspect of our performance against Newport and that set us on our way. We managed to carry that on, and managed to produce another strong, albeit defensive performance, away at Blackpool.
“I’m pleased for where we are.
“I’m not getting too down and despondent of last week, I have to make that clear.”
Exeter are level on points but one place above the U’s in the table.
But the Grecians’ home form has not been great – they have yet to win in the league at St James Park this season.
“They’ve got their own issues at the football club and they have to make sure that they look at theirs and we look at ours,” said Derry.
“I always say, and this is with no disrespect to the opposition, I’m only concentrating on us. The strides that we’ve made across the board at this football club have been there to see.
“I know that at this moment in time we’re looking at a position where we don’t look too fondly on it – we want to be higher up the league but I think at this moment we’re six points out of the play-offs.
“There were many times last year where we were four, five outside the play-offs and everyone looked on that as a really successful time and we’re a couple of points down on that this year.
“If we’d have got the three points last week it would have been three points off the play-offs.
“So don’t get too carried away. I’ll leave it to everybody else to look at the negatives, I’m one for looking at the positives of the season.”
