Cambridge United suffer FA Youth Cup defeat to Scunthorpe United
U's beaten at Cambs Glass Stadium
Cambridge United’s hopes of a glamour tie at Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup were brought to an end with a 1-0 second-round defeat to Scunthorpe United at the Cambs Glass Stadium.
The U’s clearly had the bit between their teeth from the off, and made a bright start, earning a corner after only 25 seconds – although it ended up coming to nothing.
They continued to take the game to the visitors, and in the fourth minute Sam Bennett’s cross to the back post was met with a shot by Joe Neal, who hit the base of the post.
Scunthorpe started to find a way back into the game, and Steven Shaw produced a great block to deny James Kalo.
And at the other end, Lee Watkins saw a similar chance go the same way.
It looked like United had broken the deadlock in the 40th minute as Jordan Norville-Williams’ deep cross was met by the head of Bennett, but Scunthorpe keeper Adam Kelsey kept out the chance, and the rebound was headed out for a corner by a defender.
However, the first goal arrived five minutes later and it went to Scunthorpe; a fierce cross by David Allasan was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate Shaw.
There were few chances for either team in the second half.
Scunthorpe put a number of dangerous, zipped deliveries across the face of goal from the right, but they were lacking the finishing touch.
United had plenty of possession without looking too threatening or being able to test Kelsey again in the Scunthorpe goal.
So the prize of a trip to face holders Chelsea away in the third round went to Scunthorpe.
