Joe Ironside’s 100th appearance goal was not enough to inspire Cambridge United to success as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One.

Mark Bonner made four changes to the team that beat Exeter City 2-1 at the weekend, with Greg Taylor, Brandon Haunstrup, Liam O’Neil and Shilow Tracey all brought into the starting line-up.

The U’s broke the deadlock at Fratton Park on the half-hour.

O’Neil swung in a corner that was turned in by Ironside at the near post on his landmark appearance for the U’s.

Portsmouth equalised in first-half added on time, as Owen Dale’s cross from the left was put back across goal for Colby Bishop to score from close range.

The hosts took the lead on the hour when U’s keeper Dimi Mitov was unable to hold Tom Lowery’s free kick and Ronan Curtis forced the ball home.

Portsmouth made it 3-1 on 70 minutes as substitute Michael Jacobs slotted home a pass from Bishop.

It was 4-1 in the 77th minute when Reco Hackett’s cross was headed home by Connor Ogilvie.

United are on the road again this Saturday (August 20) as they travel to Charlton Athletic.
