Cambridge University RUFC confirm Emilia Bushrod and Ben Gompels will captain teams for the 2023/24 season and Varsity Matches
Cambridge University RUFC has announced its two captains that will lead their teams into the forthcoming 2023/24 campaign.
Pembroke College’s Emilia Bushrod was re-elected to the position, having skippered the side that was beaten by Oxford University at Twickenham in March.
The Welsh player has now joined a small group of captains to have served for more than one season. On the men’s side, this list includes Stephen Leonard (2019, 2021), Mark Bailey (1983, 1984), Ian Peck (1979, 1980) and Angus Stewart (1975, 1976). For the women, Veronique Robinson (1994, 1995) and Vicky McEvoy (2011, 2013) both captained the CUWRFC before the two clubs merged in 2015.
Meanwhile, Ben Gompels has been appointed the new captain of the men’s team.
Gompels, who has played rugby professionally for Bristol, stepped up to the role for this year’s Varsity triumph in the absence of the injured Toby Flood.
And he will now continue on a permanent basis, and in doing so has become the first male player from Lucy Cavendish to captain the rugby union team, having also been the first male player from the college to become a Blue.
The date for next year’s Varsity matches is yet to be confirmed.
