The team captains have been announced for the Walking Football Marathon fundraiser on bank holiday Monday, May 2.

The 12-hour, five-a-side match is being held at the Abbey Leisure Centre from 10am to 10pm to raise money to support the disability football sessions run by Cambridge United Community Trust.

It is also being played to promote the physical and mental wellbeing benefits to all of playing walking football, and has so far raised more than £5,500 of its £15,000 target.

Alessio Verrecchia and Zoe Harvey will be the captains of the team representing the disability sessions, while the team representing the more senior players will be skippered by Lesley Tubb, 69, and Jeremy Buckingham, 79.

All four captains attend the Trust’s football sessions and have been positively impacted by the football.

The 12-hour fundraiser will see two squads of 40 to 50 players, with roll on, roll off subs, demonstrate the inclusivity of walking football, which is a fast-growing sport, and will feature a mixture of men and women, aged from 12 to 84.

If anyone is interested in playing on the day they should contact event organiser Nigel Hillyard at nigel.hillyard@btinternet.com.
