Setback for U's but high hopes for new ideas

Robert Osbourn is looking forward to seeing Cambridge United’s future stadium plans.

After Grosvenor withdrew its planning application for a sporting village at Trumpington Meadows, it has led to questions about what that will mean for the redevelopment of the U’s Cambs Glass Stadium.

And Cambridge Fans United chairman Mr Osbourn is eager to find out what happens next.

“We’ve long anticipated the plans that Grosvenor had, which we thought were very good,” he said.

“The early stages of the plans were to have a stadium at Trumpington but that was going to come to nothing as it was going to be opposed by a lot of people.

“The plans that were actually submitted seemed to be a good arrangement, I think very importantly creating a sporting presence in Trumpington – that and the housing there were going to create the income to start revamping the Abbey.

“South Cambs [District Council] have made it very clear that they would not be supporting it and I think that is a great shame as there is a need for sporting facilities in the area.

“It was a tremendous project and it’s a great shame that we will now not see that.”

Now supporters are waiting to hear what the club have been working in, as in its statement it revealed it has been exploring other options.

“The important thing is to focus on what is possible now and Grosvenor and the club have in their plans for replacing it,” said Mr Osbourn.

“Clearly, there have been plans in the background for developing Plan B, and the sooner that becomes news the better in many ways.

“There is quite a bit of background work to be done and talking to see whether it is a starter, whatever it may be.

“I guess it is something to be developing the Abbey.

“Very few people were keen to see a move away from the Abbey as it has memories and connotations for many people.

“Having something in that location and fit for purpose for the future is what most fans would want.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what those plans are and what it might entail, and what we willl get to enjoy as the plans come about.”
