Cambridge City Hockey Club’s Ladies’ first team remain in Women’s Conference Midlands title race after win over Stourport
Cambridge City remain in the England Hockey Women’s Conference Midlands title hunt following Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Stourport.
Emily McStea continued her positive campaign for City with two first-half penalty corner goals, taking her tally for the season to 17 in the process.
Meanwhile, after the restart Sofie Watts enjoyed a moment to remember as she netted her first ever National League goal on just her third appearance.
The victory has seen second-placed City open up an eight-point advantage over Stourport in third, while table-topping Loughborough Students II, who they are set to host on Saturday (8 March), are six points better off.
Also winning by the same scoreline were Cambridge City II as they got the better of Norwich City II in the East Women’s League Premier Division.
Emily Clapham’s powerful strike sent City into the break a goal to the good before Catriona MacIver and Rachel Clark made sure of the outcome in the second half.
Elsewhere, there was a 3-2 victory for Cambridge City IV during their East Women’s League Division 1 North encounter with Dereham.
A brace from Anna Nicholson put City in front after they fell behind, with the scoring being eventually completed by Argentina Under-18 international Sofia Esevich’s first goal on English soil.
The other women’s team to pick up maximum points at the weekend was City VII as they beat Kettering III 3-0 in the East Women’s League Division 5 North West.
Second-half goals from Faith Leader, Catrina Smith and Hattie Emerson sealed the victory.
While Cambridge City suffered a 6-3 defeat to Chelmsford in the England Hockey Men’s Conference Midlands, there was wins for the men’s second, third and fourth teams.
Pete Liddle netted a hat-trick for Cambridge City II during their 6-1 victory at the expense of Cambridge Hockey Club in the East Men’s League Division 1 North.
Goals from Hamish Weir, Ben Dudgeon and Sam Rutter accompanied Liddle’s trio.
Cambridge City III edged past Cambridge University III 2-1 in the East Men’s League Division 3 North West courtesy of goals from Sam Cortinhas and Dimitri Amireh.
A win next time out would secure the third team the league title.
As for Cambridge City IV, they ran out 5-3 winners in the same division against Spalding II thanks to goals scored by Tom Hall, Pete Wilkinson, Harry Speed and a brace from Ed Johnson.
