Cambridge City held to 0-0 draw in Isthmian League North Division clash against Maldon & Tiptree

Cambridge City’s recent struggles in front of goal continued during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home with Maldon & Tiptree.

A run of 10 games unbeaten had moved the Lilywhites to the fringes of the Isthmian League North Division play-offs, but having found the back of the net just once in their previous four outings, the gap to the top five now stands at 10 points.

“We did ok. We were good in spells and defended very well,” said City boss Jamie Cureton.

“It’s a similar thing to what the theme has been over the last two or three weeks at the top end of the pitch – just that little bit of quality has been missing, whether that’s the cross, the final pass or the decision making and finishing.

“They’ve hit the post but Philpsy (James Philp, City goalkeeper) has not had much to do. Their goalkeeper also hasn’t had a lot to do but we’ve been in areas where we should have created more.

“It’s been a bit of a theme and it’s something we’re working on. We just have to be better in that final third.

“I can’t fault the boys in terms of their effort and defensively we were good, but it’s not just the frontline and Smudg (George Smith, striker), it’s the crosses he receives. It’s an overall thing – the team needs to be better when we get in good areas of the pitch.”

City, who are ninth, return to action next Saturday (22 February) when they travel to face 12th-placed Gorleston.
