Cambridge-based Squared Circle Boxing Academy face prospect of having to fold unless they find new home
A Cambridge-based boxing club is in real danger of going out of existence after being informed that it must leave its current premises.
Squared Circle Boxing Academy, which was formed in 2018, is set to vacate its base at the Cambridge Spiritualist Church on Newmarket Road by 6 May at the request of the hosts.
And if no new home is found, its 70-odd members – many of whom are youngsters – will be without a club.
For head coach Justin Spring, it is a scenario that fills him with dread, with the club currently acting as a safe haven for its members – some of whom Spring believes could “end up on the streets”.
He said: “We need the community in Cambridge and the council to step up. I give my life to the club and it’s very much a family that we have created.
“We give everyone a chance. The club has had youngsters with learning difficulties and we’ve had kids come in that barely spoke when they arrived, but after a few weeks they’re making conversation and cracking jokes.
“The club has played such a big role in helping so many people and we’ve had plenty of messages from parents and schools over the years saying just that.
“My fear is what will happen is we’ll end up with kids that have nowhere to go and they’ll be on the streets.
“It’s something that concerns me greatly. We’re desperate for someone to come forward. While the area we are based in isn’t the richest, Cambridge is a wealthy city – surely there is somewhere that can host a boxing club.”
