Former Norwich City, Reading and Bristol Rovers forward Jamie Cureton could potentially lace up his boots to play for Cambridge City this season
Manager Jamie Cureton believes Cambridge City fans will see him in action on the pitch before the season is done – and it is not likely to be his swansong appearance either.
With available numbers currently low in his squad, the 49-year-old former Norwich City, Bristol Rovers and Reading striker has been named on the subs bench over the course of the Lilywhites’ last two matches.
But while he has not brought himself on in the last-gasp draws at Cornard Rangers and Bury Town, he feels that will change as he looks to help his side through their final eight Isthmian League North Division matches.
“I probably will be involved now every game, just because of where we’re at,” he said. “And yes, I probably will at some point play and make appearances.
“Today I felt we had enough on the bench, but I’ll probably start to get changed in the next week or two and start to come on at some point.”
And while he would not use himself at the detriment of developing talent, he admits the carrot of playing into his 50s, with his landmark birthday in August, does appeal to him.
“Yes, it’s a bit mad,” he said. “I suppose stupidly I’m like, well, if I can make an appearance this year at 49 then I’ll make another one at 50 and maybe that might be it. So maybe I’ll be the oldest player in the league.
“But I wouldn’t do it at the detriment of my team. Not at all.
“Even today, I threw Kingy (Ryan King) on who’s a young 17-year-old who’s got a bright future. And I’d rather him start to get experience and him start to build himself so that he can hopefully be part of the first team squad more next year, rather than me making another appearance.”
