David Amoo singled out the grit and determination of Cambridge United as they pulled further clear of the Sky Bet League Two relegation places.

The right winger’s deflected 19th-minute earned the U’s a win 1-0 over Port Vale at the Abbey Stadium last Saturday, giving them a fourth win in five games on their own patch.

It helped them pull seven points clear of the second relegation spot in the table, which is currently occupied by Macclesfield.

“It was just about grit and determination after getting an early goal,” said the 27-year-old. “It was about focusing, staying put and working hard, it was a tough game with all the conditions so to get the three points was the most important thing.

“All-in-all, it was a really good team performance and we really worked hard.

“The centre-backs were up against Pope, who is a difficult striker to play against, so they were different class; Dimi was fantastic; as were the midfielders Deegs and George (Maris); big Jabs (Jabo Ibehre) was holding up everything he could and Rush (Rushian Hepburn-Murphy) was making the runs.”

United will be looking to repeat the feat this Saturday (February 16) when 10th-placed Tranmere Rovers visit the Abbey.

“It’s just about taking each game one at a time, not getting too carried away and next game is Tranmere at home,” said Amoo.

“It’s going to be tough, they’re flying, they have James Norwood up front who is another tough customer and top scorer in the league. It will be another tough game and we have to be ready to go.”
