Cambridge United sign James Gibbons on two-year deal from Bristol Rovers

Cambridge United have announced the permanent signing of James Gibbons on a two-year contract.

The 26-year-old made 13 appearances for the U’s last season following his arrival on loan from Bristol Rovers at the end of January.

The right-back impressed during his spell at the Cledara Abbey Stadium last term and has put pen to paper on the eve of the team returning for pre-season training.

“I am buzzing to be back,” Gibbons said.

“I really enjoyed my football here and really liked working under the gaffer, so it was an easy decision to make the move.

“I was made to feel right at home by everyone at the club, including the supporters, who were unbelievable to me.

“We really want to kick on this season so I am excited to get going again and meet back up with the lads.”

Gibbons started his career at Port Vale, for whom he played more than 100 games for across six seasons, before moving to the Gas in 2022.

The Stoke-on-Trent-born defender joined the U’s under Neil Harris, who departed for Millwall in February and was replaced by Garry Monk in March.

Gibbons was an unused substitute in the former Swansea boss’ first two games in charge of United, but started the final eight games of the 2023/24 campaign.

“James was a consistent performer in his time with us last season,” said Monk.

“He adds great experience and versatility to the team, as well as tremendous leadership skills as an example to others in the group.

“I am very happy that he is back with us.”

Gibbons becomes the U’s second signing of the summer as he joins centre-back Kell Watts through the door at United.
