Lord's agony for Light Blues

Cambridge University were left high and dry in their run chase as they were defeated by Oxford University in the Varsity One Day Match at Lord’s.

Jamie Gnodde and Matthew Naylor were in good form for Oxford as they made 264 for 8.

Gnodde hit 76 and Naylor scored 52, while Tim Moses was the pick of the Cambridge bowlers, taking four for 56.

Cambridge made a stuttering start in reply, but the third-wicket stand between Nipuna Senaratne and Angus Dalgleish gave them impetus, taking them to 103 before Senaratne was out for 25. Dalgleish hit 68 and then Moses contributed 45.

The Light Blues headed into the final over needing 13 runs with two wickets remaining.

Ruari Crichard was run out on the first ball of the over, and then they ended up being left nine runs short of the total after Patrick Tice was dismissed.

The Four-Day Varsity Match will start at Fenner’s on Tuesday, July 4, with the series currently level after the Light Blues won the T20 game.

A 197-run partnership between Hannah Fisher and skipper Chloe Allison could not help Cambridge University women as they also lost their Varsity One-Day Match to Oxford.
