Yasin Browne try helps Eastern Counties sign off County Championship campaign on a high against Northumberland

Ben Penfold's accuracy off the tee helped Eastern Counties to a 28-27 win over Northumberland in the Bill Beaumont Senior Men’s County Championships, Division One North.

The visitors took the lead through James Bird, who also converted the try.

Eastern Counties struck back as Matt Hema touched down, with Penfold landing the extras.

They were behind again though, when Alex Clark got Northumberland’s second, with Bird converting.

Excellent interplay from Fin Creighton, Penfold, Hema and Cameron Greenhall led to Chris Kolopa touching down for Eastern Counties, with Penfold’s extras making it 14-14.

Northumberland had a 19-14 lead at half time as skipper Keith Laughlin crashed over.

Creighton touched down for Eastern Counties at the start off the second half, with Penfold converting to put them in front, and Yasin Browne got the bonus-point fourth try, with the fly-half converting a fourth successful conversion.

Defences got on top as Northumberland sought to draw level and Eastern Counties attempted to pull further clear.

Bird landed three points off the tee and, with two minutes remaining, Ed Bloodworth touched down in the corner to reduce the arrears to one point, but the conversion was missed meaning Eastern Counties held on for the win.

Eastern Counties Wanderers won 31-22 against Northumberland Centurions, with tries from Chris Collins, Chris Blom, Corey Button, Ryan Gardiner and Chris Baird, plus three conversions from Button.
