Ed Hyde was the mainstay of the innings as Histon started the defence of their Whiting & Partners Cambs & Hunts Premier League, Division One title with a 19-run win over Ramsey.

Having been put into bat first, Hyde forged a 41-run stand with Tom Griffiths (30) for the second wicket but it was not until Jake Allcock came in that they rushed the score along.

Allcock made 37, but No 3 Hyde, Histon’s captain this year, was the last man to fall, having made 90, with the visitors eventually closing on 207 for 7.

The bowlers then took over, and dismissed the hosts for 188.

They were making good progress to reduce Ramsey to 77 for 6, but Mark Saunders then put up a stubborn defence.

Batting at No 7, he scored an unbeaten 68 off 81, which included a 52-run eighth-wicket stand with Sam Vallance (23).

However, they were all out for 188.

Hamza Rashid, John Turner and Ben Leach all got three wickets apiece for Histon.

Old Leysians got off to life in Division One with a four-wicket win at Newmarket.

They bowled out Newmarket for 151, and then Andrew Bramley hit an unbeaten 52 as Old Leysians posted 152 for 5.

Lewys Hill and Ravi Mahendra were among the wickets as Foxton Granta made a winning start as a new club by beating March Town by four wickets.

March had moved into a promising position of 205 for 6, but lost the next four wickets for just an extra 34 runs as they were bowled out for 239.

Mahendra ended with three for 34 from eight overs, and Hill claimed three for 42 from 10.

In reply, Harry Hopwood made a half-century (52) in valuable partnerships with Johnny Atkinson (32) and Adil Abraham, whose unbeaten 37 off 35 balls saw Foxton Granta home with 240 for 6.

Kesarinandan Parasaram had a key role with bat and ball to make sure Cambridge St Giles got home with a 13-run win over Eaton Socon.

James Gillespie made a steady 73 and Parasaram a blistering 32, off 16 balls, as St Giles closed on 195 for 9.

Eaton Socon were reduced to 92 for 8 before Ethan Rice (50) and David Humphrey (41 not out) put on some stubborn resistance for the eighth wicket, but they were stopped on 182 for 9. Parasaram took three for 47 and skipper Chris Germon snared three for 43.
