Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan interests Cambridge United
Lewis McGugan is on the radar of Cambridge United, according to Colin Calderwood.
The head coach explained at his weekly press call that the former Nottingham Forest man has trained with the U’s, but is also attracting interest from another club.
McGugan is a free agent and has been without a side since leaving Northampton Town at the end of last season.
“Lewis has been down and trained with us for a couple of days,” said Calderwood. “He has also been with another club and played a game over there.
“We’re just assessing the situation. He is a free agent so in essence there is no real need to do something until everyone feels comfortable it is the right thing to do.
“He is a possibility, I must admit that. But he has also been out for a long time and people who come in have to be capable of helping us pretty quickly.”
Calderwood knows McGugan from his time in charge at Forest, where the 30-year-old midfielder made more than 200 appearances. He also had spells at Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.
“I think any player with a new coach or manager it’s better if they feel comfortable with them and understand a little bit of what’s required and the day-to-day duties of their job,” said Calderwood.
“Someone like that, it does help them settle in a little bit quicker but they are coming into a new team so there is always that settling in process that has to happen.
“Lewis has got terrific ability and has shown that through a number of years. He would be a great addition, if close to really good fitness.
“He has terrific set plays, terrific awareness on the pitch and an ability to help move the ball for his team.”
