Former Cambridge United captain Leon Legge talks up Chelsea Premier League winner Damien Duff as potential Garry Monk replacement

Former Cambridge United captain Leon Legge has put Damien Duff’s name forward as a potential candidate to replace Garry Monk as the club’s new head coach.

Having won just nine of his 49 games in charge of the U’s, Monk was relieved of his duties earlier today.

The current favourite with the bookmakers to take over is former United boss Mark Bonner, who left the club after a largely successful stint in charge back in October 2023.

However, Legge believes that the Cambridge board should consider the appointment of Duff.

The 45-year-old, who won the Premier League on two occasions during his playing days with Chelsea, is currently in charge of Shelbourne – the club that he guided to a first League of Ireland Premier Division title since 2006 last term.

Legge, who played for Cambridge between 2015 and 2018, wrote on X: “Damien Duff, be a great first move into English football management and done a fantastic job in Ireland.”

It is believed Duff’s contract with Shelbourne is due to expire in the summer of 2026.
