Foxton Granta secure place at Twenty20 Finals Day with victories over Ramsey and Histon
Foxton Granta booked their place in the semi-finals of the Whiting LLP Twenty20 competition with back-to-back victories over Histon and Ramsey on Saturday.
Last season’s Division One champions opened up their double-header against Histon and run out winners by a convincing nine-wicket margin.
Batting first, Histon struggled to form any partnerships as Foxton Granta shared the wickets around.
Kaif Iqbal (3-26) was the pick of the attack alongside useful contributions from Alex Fullarton (2-10) and James Scott (2-20) as Histon reached their permitted 20 overs on a score of 106-9.
Having impressed with the ball, Fullarton went on to play a supporting role during the run chase.
Coming in at number three after the early dismissal of Douglas Rice (5), Fullarton (16 not out) watched on as opener Adam Webster hit five maximums on his way to scoring an unbeaten 65 runs from only 47 balls.
The match up with Ramsey was a match closer affair that went down to the final ball, but Foxton Granta got the job done courtesy of Kieran Weatherall’s six.
As was the case against Histon, Lewys Hill’s side bowled first. On this occasion Johnny Atkinson (3-18) made the most inroads into the Ramsey batting order, while Hill, Fullarton and debutant Weatherall snared one wicket apiece.
Chasing 115 for victory, Foxton Granta found themselves 56-2 at the halfway stage after the early dismissals of Webster and Fullarton, neither of whom troubled the scoreboard after their first-match heroics.
This time it was Atkinson with a knock of 38 that top scored alongside some good scores of 17 and 12 respectively from Harry Hopwood and Ash Clark.
The match went right down to the wire with Weatherall showing no signs of nerves as he dispatched the last ball of the contest over the boundary rope.
Foxton Granta will now take on Cambridge St Giles at March Town Cricket Club on Saturday (April 29), with the winner advancing through to take on either Cambridge NCI or Newmarket in the final later on the same day.
