George Williams is in with a chance of featuring in Cambridge United’s trip to Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One on Saturday (August 20).

The right-back missed the 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth on Tuesday night because of a dead leg.

United head coach Mark Bonner was holding his media call as the players reported for training on Thursday morning, and was waiting for an update on the availability of Williams.

“He is with the physios today,” said Bonner. “He’s got a chance, but we will have to see how he is today and tomorrow as to whether he can get on the training ground.

“Hopefully he can do a little bit of controlled work and see where he is for tomorrow (Friday), so there is a chance but it’s certainly not definite.”

Bonner is hopeful that the rest of the squad will be given a clean bill of health.

“We got home at 4am [after travelling back from Portsmouth], and I didn’t get hold of many people yesterday and everyone is just stumbling in right now,” he said.

“Today is a bit of a see-how-everybody-is day. I’m sure we’ve got a few knocks from the game, but there was nothing dramatic at full time that we needed to worry about.

“Other than a few being probably tired and missing a night’s sleep, I’m sure they will be OK and hopefully we can get everybody on the grass to do something today and crack on for the weekend.

“Hopefully, we’ve got players to add to the squad rather than take out.”
