George Williams has delivered a glowing report on settling into life at Cambridge United at the start of the League One season.

The 28-year-old right-back moved to the Abbey Stadium in the summer from Bristol Rovers, and has caught the eye with some impressive performances.

Williams has started all six of the U's games in a return to the right-back role after spells as right wing-back and centre-back at previous clubs in recent years.

It has all helped to make an easy adjustment.

“I’m loving it, to be honest,” said Williams. “I feel like I’m playing the best football I’ve played in a long time.

“I feel like I’m just really happy here, and when you’re happy I think it shows on the pitch.

“The lads, since day one, have made me feel really welcome. The staff have been brilliant with me, and I think it’s starting to tell off the pitch.

“I’m the happiest I’ve been in ages, and I actually love it here. I love my football and I just can’t wait to play in as many games as possible.

“When you’re happy on the pitch, it relates to everything you do in life, with training every day and the games you’re playing in.

“I think there is a really good feel about the place, and from a personal view as well, I’m happy and settled here and that correlates to performances.”

Having earned an assist in the 3-0 win over Burton Albion last weekend, when defender Tom Hamer turned a cross into his own net, Williams went one better in the midweek defeat to Millwall in the Carabao Cup, scoring the opening goal of the match with a first-half header.

“It was a really good feeling,” said Williams. “It was right in front of the fans, they travelled really well; I think there was nearly 800 fans there which was fantastic.

“It was something we worked on quite a bit. Barry Corr has been working really hard with our set pieces and we’ve tried a few things, and this one we set up like a corner. Ben Worman put in a great ball, and it was perfect.

“I had one similar at Plymouth and I thought maybe I should have scored that one so when this one came to me, the ball was just so good that I just got a touch on it and I was absolutely buzzing with it.

“It was a game in which we should have got something from, I think. We were right in it. I know 3-1 does not maybe reflect that, but I thought we had a lot of chances and had a bit of control really before they scored.

“When they scored the second goal, I was a bit like ‘where’s that come from?’. But there were plenty of positives to take and, on a personal note, I was over the moon to score my first goal."

Williams was also given the captain's armband for the Millwall match, in the absence of skipper Greg Taylor through injury.

“It was a huge blow for us losing Greg because not only is he such a good player but he is also a great leader for us. We’re all gutted for him and wish him well,” said Williams.

“I think it’s important to have as many captains on the pitch as possible, and I think you could give the armband to six or seven players and it would be absolutely fine.

“There are a lot of leaders in the squad, and it’s such a tight-knit group. It was a real honour to be given the role against Millwall.”
