Gog Magog Golf Club scratch team seal historic county hat-trick
Goddard Cup adds to trophy collection
Gog Magog have completed a historic Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union treble.
They lifted the Goddard Cup at Saffron Walden with a 10½-1½ win over Ely, whose sole victory came through Luke Ryan’s 3&2 defeat of Nicholas Smits.
The Goddard Cup adds to their success in the Championship Shield and the Scratch Foursomes League, making them the first club in the county to complete the unique treble.
Gog Magog’s team of captain Dave Quinney, county champion Smits and Ed Dimambro will now represent Cambs in the English Champion Club competition at East Devon Golf Club.
Meanwhile, Marcella Tuttle, Sarah Greenall and Edie Douglas retained their Cambs and Hunts Ladies County Golf Association, Mary Cole Rose Bowl trophy.
The Links, Newmarket trio won the competition for the first time in 39 years in 2016, and they put in another strong display to retain their title.
Tuttle, Greenall and Douglas had nett scores of 75, 73 and 74 respectively for a team total team of 222 in the 18-hole stroke-play competition at St Ives Golf Course.
Saffron Walden were runners-up on countback from Gog Magog. They both scored 231, but the lowest individual score swung it in Walden’s favour, with junior Hettie Carter hitting 71.
Elaine Purcell (83) and Lynda Minton (77) completed the team’s total.
