Former Reading, Bristol Rovers, Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers forward Jamie Cureton plays 90 minutes in Cambridge City’s 1-0 win over Sporting Bengal United

Cambridge City manager Jamie Cureton admitted that he should have made Easter Monday’s 1-0 win over Sporting Bengal United much more of a comfortable affair.

Having appeared off the bench earlier this month, the 49-year-old started himself during what was City’s final home Isthmian League North Division encounter of the campaign.

And the former Norwich City, Reading, Bristol Rovers and Queens Park Rangers frontman believes that he could have come away with a hat-trick.

“I made the decision due to numbers and having had the game on Saturday (1-0 defeat at Walthamstow) that I was going to play,” said Cureton.

“I didn’t know how long I’d last because normally for myself I’d have trained a lot more and been involved in a lot more games.

“It was probably my first start in 18 months so to last the game I’m happy, but within it I had four chances and I should have taken two, potentially three.

“I think that’s why the game has ended 1-0. I hold my hands up, I should have made it a lot more comfortable.

“But on a personal note I’m pleased to have got through 90 minutes, I put myself in areas to get chances and I got them and we’ve won the game 1-0 – those are the plus points.”

As it was, a 73rd-minute goal from Cody Cosgrove was enough for the Lilywhites to claim all three points against their already-relegated visitors.

City will now sign off for the season on Saturday (26 April) away at another of the relegated clubs in Basildon United.

If Cureton’s side, who will end up no lower than their current position of 12th, are able to better the result that Redbridge record against Gorleston then they will finish the campaign in 11th place.
