Cambridge City still hunting first Vitality England Hockey Women's Division One South win of the season after loss to Sevenoaks
The wait for a first Vitality England Hockey Women’s Division One South victory of the season goes on for Cambridge City after they suffered a 2-0 loss at home to their Sevenoaks counterparts on Saturday.
It was a much improved display from City, who were indebted to goalkeeper Kayley Morris during the first half as she produced a string of last ditch saves.
The hosts provided more attacking impetus in the second half with Emily McStea seeing her stick shot saved and Amie Hunt having her effort from a penalty corner cleared off the line.
However, the visitors broke the deadlock with a goal in the third quarter and they made sure of the outcome with a second late on as City pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Bottom-of-the-table City will aim to break their duck for the campaign at Wimbledon on Saturday (November 12).
In the East Women’s League Premier, goals from Catreiona MacIver and Imogen Callaghan earned Cambridge City II a 2-2 draw at Upminster, while Cambridge City III chalked up a 5-2 home win over Norwich Dragons in the East Women’s League Division 1 North.
Goals from Alex Marshall and Millie Ely put City in the ascendancy early on in the proceedings before Chanre Bond took centre stage by scoring a hat-trick.
Two early goals from Madi Yeoman set the tone for Cambridge City IV during their 5-2 home win at the expense of City of Peterborough III in the East Women’s League Division 2 North West.
Kath Nicholls, Anna Parker and Anna Dicker also got their names on the scoresheet.
Cambridge City V dished out a 13-0 hammering to Kettering III in their East Women’s League Division 3 North West encounter.
Anna Gomez scored five goals while there were hat-tricks for Becky Hayward and Fran Burn alongside a brace courtesy of Stephanie Birkwood.
Meanwhile, a goal from Phoebe Biggs was enough for Cambridge VI to win 1-0 away at St Neots III in the East Women’s League Division 4 North West.
In the England Hockey Men’s Division One North, Cambridge City dropped to fourth after going down 8-3 away at the University of Birmingham.
Grant Gilmour’s team will aim to bounce back at the first time of asking when they host Cardiff & Met on Saturday (November 12).
The men’s II, III and IV teams all suffered defeats at the hands of Harleston Magpies II, St Ives and and Kettering respectively, while a goal from Simon Webb was not enough to prevent Cambridge City V from losing their East Men’s League Division 4 North West home clash against Spalding III 2-1.
There was better news in the East Men’s League Division 4 North West as Cambridge City VI recorded a 8-0 win on the road at Kettering IV.
Raphael Zailer-Fletcher spearheaded the charge with a hat-trick, with further goals coming courtesy of Tim Ireland (2), Stuart Perry, Ethan Martinez-McCune and Stephen Graves for the new leaders.
Cambridge City Men’s Veterans could not follow suit though as they lost 3-0 at home to City of Peterborough III.
