Joe Ironside: 'Cambridge United forwards working together as a unit'

Joe Ironside is enjoying being part of the strikeforce that has fired Cambridge United to the higher echelons of the League Two table this season.

The summer arrival from Macclesfield Town has helped himself to 11 goals from his 31 appearances – a decent return to go alongside the league's current leading scorer and team-mate Paul Mullin with 22.

Injured youngster Harvey Knibbs, meanwhile, has also weighed in with a couple of goals.

No side in the division can better Cambridge's goal tally of 48, and Ironside believes the collective spirit among the forwards at the club is a major factor in their potency in front of goal.

"Me and Mulls play up front together and we work as a two," said the 27-year-old. "If one of us is scoring, that's a good thing. It's the same with Knibbsy as well.

"We all work together and if we can collectively get goals we've got a better chance of getting the three points.

"I'm just happy to keep doing what I'm doing, as long as I'm effective. Mulls can score his goals, I'll keep scoring mine and we help each other. I think we complement each other pretty well.

"As a strikeforce we are all different in our own rights. We've all got different strengths and as a whole we complement each other well.

"Before this new lockdown we (Ironside and Mullin) used to play golf together, we get along really well off the pitch. We're mates off the pitch and on the pitch I think that helps.

"We all drive each other on. We're a unit, as strikers we all work together and if we're scoring goals as a unit then we're doing our job as a team. Whoever scores the goals, we're all buzzing for each other."
