Jordan Gent heads Cambridge City to victory over Soham Town Rangers in Northern Premier League
Cambridge City completed a festive season double with a 2-1 win at Soham Town Rangers in the Northern Premier League, Midlands Division on New Year’s Day.
Fresh from a late show in a 4-2 win over Histon on December 27, Lilywhites boss Robbie Nightingale made a move to help cover the multiple injuries in the ranks by bringing in midfielder Scott Bridges from Royston Town.
He had spent the best part of eight years with the Crows, with a gap at Hayes & Yeading, and helped both clubs to the secure promotion to the Southern League, Premier Division.
Bridges got his City days off to the perfect start, as they went ahead in the first minute at Soham.
A ball was forced home from a corner, and it was initially credited to Bridges, but later corrected to Ryan Swift being the opening scorer, his third goal in two games.
There were chances for both sides throughout the match, and it looked like City had been denied all three points when Ally Conway equalised for Soham in the 88th minute.
But there was still time for more action, and the Lilywhites earned a corner in the last minute which Jordan Gent powered home to clinch a 2-1 success.
It moves City to 11th in the table, just four points off 10th place.
The Lilywhites are away this weekend (January 8) at Bedworth United, who are six points higher in the table in eighth place.
