Liam Bennett has signed a new contract with Cambridge United.

The 20-year-old defender has been one of the breakout players for the U's this season.

He caught the eye in the Papa John's Trophy and, after a spell away on loan, returned to become a regular fixture in the first-team squad.

Bennett ended the campaign by starting four of United's last five matches in Sky Bet League One.

Having signed the new two-year deal, he said: “I am delighted. It's a great opportunity for me and another step in the right direction with a club that is going in the right direction too.

“I can't wait to keep kicking on and enjoying my time here.

“It's been a big learning experience throughout last year. I am just looking forward to keep making progress and keep proving my worth.”

Bennett originally joined United from AFC Sudbury in 2020, via partner club St Neots Town, and was drafted into the first-team set-up last year, making 10 appearances this season including two man-of-the-match performances.

“Liam has had an encouraging season with some excellent performances in the league and cup competitions," said United head coach Mark Bonner.

“Coupled with games on loan and in our development team, he has been a regular part of first team training and his improvements have been clear to see.

“He is tenacious and has a focus that all the young players can learn from. His resilience and drive will accelerate his progress and his aim is to secure more senior appearances next season in order to continue working towards establishing himself in the first team.

“We are excited to see that progress in the years ahead.”

Bennett's new contract includes a one-year option for the club and he joins Adam May, Will Mannion, Harrison Dunk and Greg Taylor to become the fifth player to renew terms with the U's this closed season.
