Liam O’Neil will move into a seventh season at Cambridge United.

The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a new one-year deal with the U’s.

O’Neil joined from Chesterfield in January 2017, and has made 146 appearances.

“I am obviously delighted to get the deal over the line and to play here at the Abbey again in-front of the fans for my hometown team," said O’Neil, who grew up in Swavesey.

“The club is going in the right direction and hopefully we can maintain our place in League One next year and push on even more."

United head coach Mark Bonner said: “"I am really pleased that we have agreed with Liam to extend his stay with us after some excellent performances and contributions to the team last season.

“As we prepare for next year, I am certain we are a stronger squad with Liam as a part of it. “His influence on the team, professionalism and character help create the environment that we want and I am looking forward to seeing how much he can influence our team in the season ahead."

O'Neil follows in the footsteps of Liam Bennett, Adam May, Will Mannion, Harrison Dunk and Greg Taylor to sign a new contract during the closed season.
