Cambridge City leave it late to record 1-1 draw at Haringey Borough in Isthmian League North Division

Manager Jamie Cureton felt that the 1-1 draw at Haringey Borough last weekend summed up his Cambridge City side’s season.

Despite creating a number of opportunities against relegation-threatened Borough, it looked for a long while that the Lilywhites were going to slip to a 1-0 defeat after falling behind to Scott Mitchell’s 15th-minute opener.

However, Alfie Mason struck in stoppage time at the end of the second half to salvage a share of the spoils for Cureton’s men.

The City boss told the club’s YouTube channel: “I suppose it’s a bit of the story of our season.

“We haven’t scored enough goals all season and that’s something we need to improve on massively.

“Whether that’s the chances being taken or whether it’s the chances created, we need to be better at the top end of the pitch.”

With City comfortably ensconced in mid-table within the Isthmian League North Division, Cureton has used the last few games to switch up formation.

City have been lining up with a three-man defence and wing-backs of late – and it is a tactic that he is keen to utilise on a more regular basis next term.

He added: “I like it because I like two up top – it’s just having the right personnel to play it.

“With how the season is going, I felt it was the right time to have a look at it.

“It’s a formation I like and it’s getting the balance right in the back three and the wing-backs – that’s normally the sort of areas you need to work on.

“If everyone is fit and available we will probably continue with it until the end of the season and it’s something that I want to push on next season as well.

“It’s good that we can have a run of games playing it.”

The draw at Haringey marked a debut for Jack Thomas, who joined the club on deadline day from Cheshunt.

The midfielder, who turned 27 in February, is well known to Cureton from their time together at Bishop’s Stortford.

“He’s a good player and he’s been captain of most of the places he’s been. He’s won promotions and it’s good to have him in,” he said.

“He’s another leader and that’s something we need a lot more of. We’re quite a young side so it’s pleasing to get him in.”

City will host already-relegated Ipswich Wanderers on Saturday (5 April).
